Install on Linux

This guide covers setting up MASV Engine (formerly MASV Agent) on a Linux host machine. If you prefer to use Docker instead, see the Docker setup guide.

Installation

Debian-based systems (apt)

Running MASV Engine

Package installation adds a systemd service file masv-engine.service to /usr/lib/systemd/system. This service is configured to automatically start the MASV Engine background server on system startup using the command masv server start.

Caution

• The background systemd service runs as the root user. This grants the background service access to all connected disk drives.
• By default, all downloaded files belong to the root user. To assign file ownership to a particular user, configure the gid/uid parameters when manually starting downloads or when registering Storage Gateway connections.

Manage the service with standard systemctl commands:

# Stop the running service
systemctl stop masv-engine

# Start the service
systemctl start masv-engine

# Restart the service
systemctl restart masv-engine
